Social justice

and anti-oppression values.

  • Our practice celebrates People of Color, Queer communities, immigrants and other marginalized groups.

  • As members of these communities, what therapists at Fig Tree offer in therapy comes not just from what we’ve learned, but also profoundly from who we are.

We value your identity, cultural practices and personal beliefs.

We believe these offer an intuitive well of healing, strength and resilience, and we want to help you draw on these to personalize your healing and personal growth. We also want to empower you with new tools, so that you can better cope with stress, depression and anxiety.

  • • We believe in the abolition of all borders, prisons, binaries, and supremacisms.

    • We prioritize understanding our own experiences from the lens of structural oppression, and we understand that societal, political, and other institutional forces can influence mental health.

    • Fig Tree provides services that have an intentional anti-oppression lens, and we transform the typical therapeutic space that only functionally meets our clients’ basic needs into an empowering environment that cultivates community.

  • • Fig Tree hires therapists with marginalized identities. We believe it is important for therapists to relate to a client's experience of “not belonging” on a personal level.

    • Our therapists are diverse in race, ethnicity, economic class, gender identity /expression, immigration status, (dis)ability, and religion. We need therapists of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and specialties to better serve the unique experiences of our clients.

    • Fig Tree promotes the foundation of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our culture and practice.

  • • While therapy doesn’t have to be long-term, Fig Tree is committed to be a safe place where clients can heal by providing consistently excellent quality of care.

    • Fig Tree hires and values administrative and billing staff who are the know-hows in the mental health field.

    • We invest in our team members by providing fair compensation, clinical supervision, health insurance, billing and scheduling support, and other supports.

  • • Fig Tree Counseling began with the simplest of premises: people are good. We do the best we can under the conditions we are given. We practice radical compassion with our clients and within our team.

    • We believe consent is an ongoing process. Fig Tree provides collaborative and consensual care work that recognizes the relationship between mental health and social oppression.

    • We believe in taking responsibility for our actions, being transparent in our decision-making processes, and take ownership for our mistakes. We strive to create a culture of trust and integrity,

From Our Clients

“If social justice is important to you, and you want a therapist who cares about decolonizing mental health, fig tree is where to go. I’m so glad that I finally found a therapist who understands the impact of racism, classism and sexism.”

“Lola is very aware and insightful of the difficulties of cultural adjustments and shock, uprooting, and staying in touch with one’s cultural background. She is mindful and understanding of the complexities of culture and the different backgrounds that people have.”

“What I like about my therapist is that she can relate to me on a personal level. I don’t need to explain to her how it is like to experience othering growing up. I unlearned many maladaptive thinking behavioral patterns that I have been struggling with for years.“
